Background and research interests: Esther van Ginneken completed her BA in 2009 in Liberal Arts & Sciences at University College Utrecht, with a Major in Psychology and International Relations, and a Minor in Methods and Statistics. She obtained her M.Phil and Ph.D. in Criminology from the University of Cambridge. Her doctoral research on ‘The pains and gains of imprisonment’ was an in-depth exploration of the prison experiences and release expectations of thirty male and female prisoners. She has also conducted research on the relationship between cell sharing and the quality of prison life. She is currently a Lecturer in Criminology at Liverpool Hope University. Her main research and teaching interests are imprisonment, sentencing, desistance and legal psychology.
